In 1739, Scotch settlers came up the Cape Fear River and settled at the mouth of Cross Creek. Twenty-three years later, the town of Campbellton was incorporated and, soon after, the Village of Cross Creek was established. In 1783, Campbellton and Cross Creek united to become Fayetteville.
